If you have a 401k at work you might be able to borrow off it. Don't just pull the money because you would have penalties and taxes. But borrowing is ok if you think your job is secure. You pay yourself back so the interest goes to you . It doesn't look like the stock market is going to do much for a few years either.
Don't do this if you think your job is insecure.

Hi, before you switch to prepaid phones, one thing you might consider is finding out exactly how much money you can trim off your cell bills. I personally use a Verizon Wireless cell without a land line as I've found several ways to tease out improved cell rates. Probably the most effective strategy I've found is saving me around $230 per year off my original cell bill (which equates to roughly a free month of cell service for me). To do this, I used a website called fixmycellbill (by a company called Validas) where you upload your online bill which is analyzed to determine how much money you could be saving on your plan. Up to this point everything is free. If you choose, for a nominal fee of $5, Validas provides a highly detailed and personalized cell bill adjustment report that is emailed to your wireless provider in industry specific format so you can actually implement these cash saving changes to your plan. If Validas can save you more than $5 on your bill (apparently the average customer saves $491 annually through Validas), this obviously provides a cost effective remedy for reducing cellular expenses.

I was actually so impressed by Validas that I got a job there when the opportunity arose. It's a great company that is rapidly becoming considered a top advocate for the wireless customer. Check out a profile of Validas on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch at the cnbc website. Any cell subscriber who wants to cut costs should check out this service.

Good luck getting the best rate you can.

The UAW needs a little tough love. It derailed the Cerberus deal at Delphi. Today GM suffers a loss of about $2,000 per vehicle sold. On the other hand Toyota whose employees are not part of the UAW earns a profit of about $1,200 per vehicle sold. If GM was able to operate with labor prices near Toyota’s it would have pocketed an additional $29,715,200,000.

Hi Steve

I am a debt counsellor in South Africa and provide a service exactly as you had proposed. As our legislation was recently introduced, it provides for the debt counsellor to restructure the consumer's liabilities only after the necessary living expenditure is deducted from income. It allows the DC to ratify the new payment plan by obtaining a court to that effect.

The major problem faced presently is that the avilable programs basically extends the repayment period, not really benefiting the consumer.
